Abstract: This paper aims to determine the intended meaning of the verse, “You alone we worship and You alone we ask for help,” with a focus on the exclusivity of seeking Allah’s assistance. While the verse on its apparent dictates an absolute exclusivity, this interpretation does not withstand the broader context of religious texts (Qurʾān and ḥadīth) and life. By distinguishing between the apparent (ẓāhir) and intended (murād) meanings, the paper argues that the verse is fundamentally focused on prohibiting the worship and invocation of idols and false gods, rather than forbidding all forms of help from others. This interpretation is primarily based on the analyses of classical mufassirūn, which emphasises the importance of understanding verses in their historical and theological contexts and serves as a case study on the methodology of engaging with verses that outwardly contradict the overall message of the Qurʾān.
