Kalām
The al-Maʿrifa Theology Department is dedicated to making classical Islamic texts accessible to modern audiences in a clear and relatable style.
It also strives to bridge the gap between classical theological discussions and contemporary issues. A key focus is distinguishing between fundamental and non-essential points of theology, with the aim of reducing internal conflicts within the Ummah.

Abstract: Perhaps the most famous proof used by the scholars of Kalām to prove the impossibility of the existence of multiple deities is a proof called burhān al – tamānuʿ. Although it is generally well understood by students of Kalām, this paper looks at the theological disputes that arose around this argument, how this led to the takfīr (excommunication) of one of the most respected scholars of Kalām and eventually how this led to different understandings of Qurʾān 21:22. Along the way the intent of one of the scholars that has been misrepresented up to today is clarified, a deeper understanding of epistemic certainty is gained and a discursive tradition spanning a thousand years is explored and expanded.
